CMS Releases Memorandum to States Regarding Plans for Emergency Preparedness Rules

The Director of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Survey and Certification Group delivered a memorandum to State Survey Agency Directors titled “Information on the Implementation Plans for the Emergency Preparedness Regulation,” on October 28, 2016.
The information outlined in the memorandum was announced on a recent CMS conference call, but it will be helpful for the states providers and suppliers impacted by the regulation to refer to a document that is published.
The following points are included in the memorandum:
• Beginning November 15, 2017, providers and suppliers will be surveyed for compliance with the new regulations
• Interpretive guidelines and survey procedures are under development
• CMS is currently working to develop training for surveyors, which will be web-based and self-paced
