According to new research, women with mild cognitive impairment that may lead to Alzheimer's appear to deteriorate faster than men. Duke University researchers collected data from 400 men and women in their mid-70s who experienced mild cognitive impairment, and followed up with the group over the course of eight years. Researchers found that thinking and memory deteriorated twice as fast in women than in men.
Researchers say several factors could be to blame for the increased state of deterioration in women, including the fact that women are more susceptible to developing Alzheimer's-causing brain plaque. However, more gender-specific research needs to be done in order to determine exactly why women experience faster progression to the disease.
