AHIMA Comments on ICD-10-CM Code Proposals

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) submitted comments this week on the proposed ICD-10-CM code modifications that were presented at the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee Meeting held earlier this year.
Some notable highlights are:
Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome - AHIMA supports the proposed new code for cyclical vomiting syndrome unrelated to migraine. They recommend that “NOS” be added after the inclusion term “cyclical vomiting syndrome” under the proposed new code. They believe this proposal represents a significant improvement over the previous version.
Left Against Medical Advice - AHIMA does not support the proposed code to identify patients who leave against medical advice. Rather than creating a code, they recommend deleting the Index entry for “left against medical advice.”
While they agree that patients who leave against medical advice should not be classified to code Z53.21, Procedure and treatment not carried out due to patient leaving prior to being seen by health care provider, they believe this concept is more appropriately captured by the discharge disposition codes and not by the ICD-10-CM classification.
