CMS Improves Fire Safety Standards, Causing Impact to Hospice Inpatient Facilities

Posted on Monday, May 16, 2016 1:31 PM

CMS released a final rule with updates to the fire safety standards for specific Medicare and Medicaid-participating facilities. The rule adopts the 2012 edition of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and disregards regulatory references to earlier editions of the Life Safety Code.

The requirements in this final rule improved the following: construction, protection, and operational features that are designed to provide safety for Medicare beneficiaries from fire, smoke, and panic. Some of the main updates to the final rule can be found here.

The new changes will go into effect July 5, 2016. Currently, NAHC is in the process of evaluating the final rule and will provide additional information in the upcoming weeks.
