CMS Tells Providers to Use New Medicare Cards Immediately

Posted on Thursday, May 10, 2018 8:05 PM

In April, CMS started issuing new Medicare cards without the beneficiary’s social security number on them to protect against identity theft and fraud.  The new cards will use a unique, randomly generated number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to replace the social security number.  This mass undertaking will be completed by April 2019.

Medicare is asking that beneficiaries bring their new cards to their providers as soon as they receive them, but they are also asking providers to ask their Medicare patients if they have received the new card.  Starting in October 2018 through the end of the transition period, Medicare will return the MBI on every remittance advice when you submit claims with valid and active HICNs.
