CMS to Reject Kansas’ Request for Lifetime Limit on Medicaid

CMS Administrator Seema Verma said on Monday May 7, 2018 that they are rejecting Kansas’ request for a lifetime limit on Medicaid. During her speech at the Annual American Hospital Association meeting, Verma said that a limit would remove the safety net for Americans who need it most. "We seek to create a pathway out of poverty, but we also understand that people’s circumstances change, and we must ensure that our programs are sustainable and available to them when they need and qualify for them" said Verma.
Kansas’ proposal would have imposed a three-year lifetime limit on Medicaid beneficiaries who are deemed able to work. This would have applied to about 12,000 extremely low-income parents who make up a small fraction of the 400,000 Kansans who receive Medicaid.
