HHS Announces Ransomware Guidance for Health Care Organizations

Health care organizations are faced with numerous threats of ransomware attacks, resulting in criminals denying access to important files and requiring a ransom to release them.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights publicized that a guidance for future release will support health care providers for the preparation and prevention of ransomware attacks.

Deven McGraw, deputy director for health information privacy, made several comments during the cybersecurity panel. According to a subsequent interview with Bloomberg BNA, Ms. McGraw said that the guidance will provide explanation when a ransomware attack is a “breach,” ensuring that health care organizations recognize when to report the incident and inform patients.
